I Knew Something Gray & Fugly Was Coming To UCLA But…….
I knew something Gray and FUGLY was coming to UCLA because well I was given some of the design ideas before this design became official. I used what I was given to make a few helmets that followed some of the guidelines. I was told the helmet would Matte Gray and the first thing I asked was have they already bought them (hoping the answer was no) Sadly UCLA or Adidas or both had already decided that Gray which is a trend that is dead by the way was the way to go. You can see what I came up with for the helmets here.
I shook my head and said ok I will see what I can do with what I have been given. The uniform I was not given a chance to look at but I knew it would be gray and thus FUGLY. Adidas pushed their current bad design ideas and we got the uniform you see today.
I am not a fan of this whole Hollywood nights or LA Steel or whatever stupid name you call it uniform trend. UCLA is a classic school that has lost its way. I am all for teams trying something new but someone has to be willing to tell the brand no or you end up being a laughing stock.
Adidas and its so called marketing and brand managers think that it is a good thing to have the world laughing at you. Yes, we are talking about Adidas but they have become the Lindsey Lohan of uniforms (a drunken mess that the world just keeps shaking its head at)
Lets start by looking at the uniform and breaking down where this train went off the tracks.
First of all stop with the patterns. Adidas you are the only person that thinks this pattern on everything look is a good idea. Gray is dead. It was dead two years ago. It is still dead this year. It will be dead next year. Navy they can use gray and get by with it but UCLA? UCLA is gold and light blue with a little navy blue thrown in.
The helmet should never be black, gray, or navy blue this is just a rule. Gold is great. I can even support white. I even like the idea of light blue but after that just stop please. The skyline in the UCLA logo is an idea I can go along with but just use the gold helmet.
This pattern that has shown up on all Adidas uniforms is not needed and takes away from every single uniform Adidas has made the last two seasons. If this pattern serves some purpose make it the same color as the rest o the uni.
I like the metallic screen printing.
The numbers are ok but scream Toronto Blue Jays to me.
This uniform just like every other Adidas designed uniform of the last two years chooses to ignore tradition at every school in favor of this stock high school uniform template approach that a single designer working half days could knock out every NCAA in a week.
The Adidas approach to uniform design has destroyed one of the greatest things about college football. That thing is tradition and uniqueness. Adidas takes once proud schools and jams them into this prepackaged marketing driven box that makes every school under the brand name look cheap and unimportant.
Adidas you need to wake up and realize that you need a new design direction. A design team that focuses on what makes each school special. A uniform that with no logos on it can be identified by a grad from 1910 or 3rd grader. Schools have a soul but you are forcing them to sell it to you in favor of this corporate clone idenity some idiot in marketing thinks is a good idea. You as a brand need to fire the marketing guys that must be pushing this uniformity and allow talented designers to embrace and showcase the heart of each school.
This shit is not that hard Adidas but you keep fucking it up time and time again.
NASCAR & JORDAN + Hamlin & Wallace
Sneakerheads just scroll down until the pictures. It’s ok I know most of you don’t or can’t read unless it says JORDAN.
The rest of you can read why I did this below and why JORDAN.
I know Denny Hamlin has a deal with JORDAN. I also know that he has ran a JORDAN paint job on his truck in the past but I think it is time for JORDAN or Adidas to make a hard push in NASCAR.
If a brand plays it’s cards right they could hit on something that hasn’t been seen in NASCAR. The something I am talking about is Darrell (Bubba) Wallace JR. Wallace JR. is currently paying his dues as develapmental driver for Joe Gibbs Racing. Bubba has seen early success and is quickly working his way through the ranks of NASCAR. He currently drives in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Bubba has only had a chance to race in two Nationwide races this season filling in for Gibbs’ Cup Drivers.
Why should anyone care about this kid you ask? Darrell (Bubba) Wallace JR. became the first African-American to win a NASCAR national series event since 1963 on October 26,2013. He is growing as a driver every weekend. He recently finished 7th in only his second Nationwide event this season.
There is no guarantee Bubba will ever be a great NASCAR CUP Series driver. Plenty of amazing drivers from other series have failed to carry over their success. The fact remains Bubba has been racing well and there are no indications he will stop anytime soon. A brand would be better off to spend on him now while the price is low rather than wait the two or three years it will take for him to make it the highest level of NASCAR.
This is where we have to look at things from a business point of view. Bubba races for Joe Gibbs. Denny Hamlin is also a driver for Gibbs on the Cup level. Hamlin has a sponsorship with JORDAN but I don’t think anyone is buying J’s because of Denny. If we look ahead to 2015 it is safe to say Bubba will see more seat time. I have no idea if he will have full-time ride or just fill in. I think it is safe to say that he will race in more than two Nationwide events.
JORDAN could sign Bubba if he hasn’t already sponsoring a possible Tiger Woods like figure in NASCAR. Most racing teams are based in the south and in the Carolina’s more specifically. This allows for a ton of cross marketing events between NASCAR and the newly named Charlotte Hornets.
Now on how to bring JORDAN to the masses of NASCAR. If Bubba and Hamlin are on the same team it is easy to think that the two could share a JORDAN branded car for the Nationwide Series.
JORDAN could use the car to promote new releases pairing the car up each week or month to promote the latest shoe to hit the market.
Jordan V
The designs might not always have to be as identical to the shoe as these but you can see how it would be super easy to merge the designs. The other positive is that if the team would bring on another sponsor like in the first Hamlin/Wallace FedEx/JORDAN car you could create a theme shoe for each car using the other brands colors.

Adidas C-10 & How Adidas Did Something I Like For Once
I have not been a fan of the what Adidas has been throwing out on the market the last few years. The brand as a whole has gotten drunk before doing design approvals on pretty much every product line they have. If it isn’t a stock uniform template for all of its teams making them look like your high school jv team ordering from the Eastbay team catalog or this trend lets pick an ugly pattern and throw it on everything.
This idea of we know no one likes it and it has nothing to do with the teams but people will talk about us on twitter approach is based on what? Adidas people are talking about you but that sound is laughter. They are laughing at you not with you. The brand needs to stop letting people in the marketing department drive design. The company needs to stop worrying about idiots like Kanye that only the sheep follow and let some of the talent in the building shine.
Adidas needs to open it’s eyes and let the designers design. The Designers needed to be unleashed. Their minds allow to go down the rabbit hole. Then and only then should the marketing goofs be brought in. If it was up to me I wouldn’t market it at all. If the design is great people will buy it.
Stop thinking you are on the same level as Nike. This isn’t 1988 you are behind them and by raising the prices on ok shoes to help them appeal to the Nike Hypesheep isn’t going to help. Those hypesheep will baugh anything Nike tells them to at whatever price Nike feels like robbing them at.
Adidas needs to embrace design and common sense.
This might sound like a rant on how Adidas has gone to hell but the Adidas C-10 gives me hope that someone at Adidas isn’t drinking the kool-aid that green lighted impact camo and latest Dwight Howard shoe just to name a few.
The Adidas C-10 is simple, clean, but after a closer look is rather high tech. This shoe is going to priced at $90 which in the modern sneaker rape your wallet culture is a steal. People will sleep on this one because no celeb is pushing it (yet) and as of yet they are not making them panty colors/patterns (which is a good thing).
I have yet to try this shoe on so it might feel as good as it look but I don’t care right now. I am just happy someone at Adidas isn’t doing 4 sheets of LSD before designing. This shoe gives me hope but you the sneaker consumer make me shake my head because you won’t buy this shoe you will buy a pink and gold Jordan, Kobe, KD, or Lebron for half your weeks pay and that shoe won’t even feel good on your foot.
Do yourself a favor and check out the Adidas C-10. Who knows they might suck you never know until you get them on your foot but you owe it to yourself to try them on. I know I will if I can find a pair.
